Free Tax Preparation and Who Qualifies!

Here are details about other upcoming free tax preparation events. Information about free services and eligibility for free services can be gathered by calling Summit County's Info Line at 2-1-1 or 330-376-6660. Programs also can be found on the IRS site at http://www.irs.gov or by calling 800-829-1040.

• Free tax-filing services will be offered to area residents with moderate or low incomes through clinics hosted by the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and the Ohio Benefit Bank.

Clients will be seen by appointment only. Contact Joree Jacobs at 330-777-7577 or joree@akroncantonfoodbank.org.

The first clinic will be Saturday February 6, 2010. Additional clinics will take place Feb. 27, March 6 and March 27. Each free clinic will run from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All of the clinics will be at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. High St., Akron.

Households with an adjusted gross income of less than $57,000 a year are eligible.

Ohio Benefit Bank helps Ohioans file federal and state returns electronically while simultaneously finding out their eligibility for such benefits as the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Eligible participants must bring Social Security numbers for the client and all dependents; income forms, such as W2s, 1099s and 1098s; information about other income (such as interest income); and deduction and credit information (such as child-care expenses, tuition bills and union dues). If possible, clients should bring a copy of last year's tax return.

• The Akron Summit Community Action Agency is again offering tax preparation/free electronic filing as well as helping residents find out their eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Clinics will be offered to low- and moderate-income households earning less than $49,000 a year.

Clinics will run from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through April 15 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays though April 11 at Akron Summit Community Action, 670 W. Exchange St.

Clinics will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through April 12 at Barberton Parks & Recreation Active Adult Division, 500 Hopocan Ave.

Clients must make appointments by calling the 24-hour appointment line at 866-861-6401.
Certified volunteers will attend both locations.

Clients need to bring: a valid driver's license or photo identification (identification is needed for spouse, if applicable); Social Security cards for all people listed on the return; dates of birth for all those listed on the return; all income statements (W2s, 1099s, unemployment, etc.), and any documents showing taxes withheld.

The agency will offer a Super Saturday free electronic filing/tax preparation clinic — walk-ins only — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Barberton High School, 555 Barber Road this Saturday February 6, 2010.

• Another Super Saturday event will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday February 6, 2010 at Stark State College's Advanced Technology Center, 6200 Frank Ave. NW in Jackson Township. Walk-in appointments only. The program is designed to provide free tax preparation for eligible low-income taxpayers who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

• The Akron IRS office, 2 S. Main St., will be open Saturday and Feb. 20 to help taxpayers with questions and to prepare returns for taxpayers whose income is less than $49,000. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the two Saturdays.
