Preparing For the Census Taker

What to do when a census taker visits you.

If you don't send back your form, you may receive a visit from a census taker. If a census taker visits you, here's what you should do:
  • First ask to see their ID. All census workers carry official government badges marked with just their name; they may also have a "U.S. Census Bureau" bag
  • Note that the census taker will never ask to enter your home
  • If you're still not certain about their identity, please call the Regional Census Centers to confirm they are employed by the Census Bureau
  • Answer the census form questions for your entire household (you must be at least 15 years old to answer questions) so that the census taker can record the results for submission to the Census Bureau

Census takers visit local homes several times to capture resident information for the 2010 Census. If you prefer, you can schedule a visit with your census taker. Should the census taker come when you are away from your home, they will leave a contact number. If a census taker has not visited your home or you have a question about your participation with the census, call your Census office.

Free Earth Day Rides on Akron Metro, PARTA, and SARTA

Take a seat for Mother Earth and plan how you’ll change the world from your bus seat. METRO Regional Transit Authority (Akron METRO), Portage Area Regional Transit Authority (PARTA), and Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) are joining together this Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, to give free bus rides in Summit, Portage, and Stark counties.

President Obama recently challenged Americans to take action in their homes, communities, schools, or businesses to improve the environment in honor of the upcoming 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, April 22, 2010.

In a press release issued on April 13, the President said, "As we continue to tackle our environmental challenges, it’s clear that change won’t come from Washington alone. It will come from Americans across the country who take steps in their own homes and their own communities to make that change happen. That’s why, as we get ready to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, I want to leave you with a challenge. I want you to take action – in your home or your community; at your school or your business – to improve our environment. It can be as simple as riding the bus or the subway to work, making your home more energy efficient, or organizing your neighbors to clean up a nearby park."

In addition to free rides on the three transit systems, there will be a kick-off event preceding Earth Day at METRO’s Transit Center (631 S Broadway St, Akron, Ohio) Tuesday, April 20th from 4pm to 6pm. There will be music, pizza, chicken, and prizes while supplies last.

Free fares apply to regular line service and Northcoast Express routes. PARTA’s Door-to-Door service, SCAT and Proline trips are not included in this promotion.

Medworks Free Health Care Event

Medworks will be holding another free healthcare event on May 1 and May 2.

Medworks started last year as a collaboration between all of Cleveland's medical communities to address the needs of the uninsured and underinsured.

Medical, dental and eye care will be available but patients must make an appointment today. Phone lines open at noon today and will run until 8 p.m. or until all available appointment slots are filled.

Call 216-858-6250 or toll free 1-877-790-7370. The phone lines will not be activated until just before noon.

The Medworks event will take place at the Free Medical Clinic of Greater Cleveland on Euclid Ave. on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2.

STILL HAVEN'T RECEIVED OR SENT BACK YOUR CENSUS QUESTIONNAIRE?

ANSWER IT NOW OVER THE PHONE!

That’s right – starting today you can answer the Census over the phone via an automated answering system or with a live Census representative. How does it work?

One of two ways:

1. If you have a Census questionnaire : Simply call any of the numbers listed below and enter the identification number on your form. You will be guided through an automated system to answer the same 10 questions that are on the questionnaire.

2. If you do NOT have a Census questionnaire: Call any of the numbers below and select the option to receive Census information, then, say “customer service.” This command will put you in contact with a Census representative. At this point you can ask the representative to either take your answers over the phone, or send a questionnaire to your address.

It’s that easy! Take the time to answer the Census now and avoid a home visit from a Census enumerator. Answering by phone guarantees your participation in the Census and will prevent a Census worker from visiting your home. Be Counted now!

Telephone Questionnaire Assistance (TQA)
• ENGLISH - 1-866-872-6868
• Chinese: 1-866-935-2010
• Korean: 1-866-955-2010
• Russian: 1-866-965-2010
• Spanish: 1-866-928-2010
• Vietnamese: 1-866-945-2010
• TDD (Telephone Display Device for the hearing impaired): 1-866-783-2010

Curious about what happens next

• April 19 is the deadline for the Census Bureau to receive your questionnaire by either phone or mail.

• Until May 1, you may obtain a replacement questionnaire from a Be Counted site or a QuestionnaireAssistanceCenter.

• Starting May 1 through July, Census Bureau Enumerators will visit all non-responsive homes. They will visit each home up to six times in an effort to get the resident to complete the questionnaire. Enumerators who are unable to reach household residents have the authority to ask neighbors to answer on behalf of the non-responsive residents.

• All enumeration efforts end July 10.

• The Census count is compiled and delivered to the President in December, 2010. Cities and states receive population data by March, 2011.

This is our only chance for 10 years. Don't be left out – make yourself count. Answer the Census today!

Free health care clinic planned in Cleveland

A free health care clinic will be held next month in Cleveland.

New Homeless Veterans Hotline

I’m writing to tell you about a new resource for US Veterans who may be experiencing homelessness. The Department of Veterans Affairs has created a toll-free, national hotline for veterans to provide free, 24-hour access to VA counselors and other resources that might help you. If you call during normal business hours hotline staff will ask you a few questions to figure out what you need, then they will transfer you to a live person at your local VA medical center. If you call outside of business hours, hotline staff will give you a phone number and the address of the facility nearest to you.

To call the Homeless Veteran hotline, dial 1-877-424-3838. Again, this is a toll-free call, and is available 24 hours a day. That number again is 1-877-424-3838. For more information visit http://www1.va.gov/HOMELESS/NationalCallCenter.asp.

If you call, please let them know that you heard about the hotline from Community Voice Mail. Please pass the word to any friends or family members who are veterans and may be experiencing homelessness. Thanks!

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

About the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program

Fresh fruits and vegetables are an important part of federal dietary guidelines. They are also good sources of fiber; low in sugar, fat and sodium; and nutrient-rich, yet low in calories. In addition, fresh fruits and vegetables add flavor and variety to meals.

The Department of Aging partners with Area Agencies on Aging to offer the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program in 44 counties. The program operates from June through October each year and is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Eligibility and Enrollment

You are eligible for the Ohio Senior Farmers’ Market program if you are age 60 or older and have an annual income of $20,035 or less as a single person.

To enroll, contact your area agency on aging. Staff there will be able to tell you how to access coupons. Participants receive ten $5.00 coupons valid through October. If you are homebound, you may select someone trustworthy to pick up and redeem coupons for you.

You can use your coupons at participating farmers’ markets and roadside stands. Look for the senior farmers’ market poster when shopping.

How the Program Works

Coupons can be redeemed for fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs and honey. Eligible items are listed in the chart below. Please select produce equal to the amount of the coupon. No change will be given.

Coupons may not be used to purchase flowers, potted plants, crafts, eggs, nuts, rice, popcorn, dried produce, dried herbs and baked goods. Coupons also may not be used to purchase processed foods, such as jams, apple butter, apple cider or maple syrup. Lemons, oranges, limes, grapefruits, pineapples, mangos and bananas are not grown locally and may not be purchased with coupons.
