Volunteer opportunities

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofits and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.

Akron City Hospital (Summa Health System): Office/clerical volunteers needed weekday mornings and afternoons, a minimum of four hours per week, within various departments of the hospital. Also seeking volunteers for a minimum of four hours per week to assemble multiple charts for the hospital. Schedule varies. Minimum age: 18.


Ardmore Inc.: Volunteers needed 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays to help adult mental retardation clients take part in activities such as puzzles, playing pool, shooting hoops, reading, computers, gardening and arts and crafts. Minimum age: 18, 12 with adult supervision.


Battered Women's Shelter: Shelter volunteers needed daily for a variety of needs including answering phones, crisis hot lines, office/clerical work, and assisting staff and residents. Minimum age: 18.


Community Builders Cascade Village Community: Volunteers needed once a week for one hour a week to hold exercise classes between 4 and 6:30 p.m. for housing community residents. Exercise classes seeking volunteers include martial arts/karate, aerobics and kickboxing. Minimum age: 18.


Community Support Services: Volunteers needed between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, four hours per week minimum, to greet clients and complete light office/clerical activities. Minimum age: 18.


CORE Furniture Bank (Community Outreach and Resources Exchange): Volunteer drivers needed to drive a truck and pick-up donated furniture. Flexible days/times. Warehouse escort volunteers needed on Saturdays to help people choose items from the furniture bank. Minimum age is 21, 16 with adult supervision.


CYO and Community Services: Volunteers needed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays to help with mailings and filings. Minimum age: 16.


First Tee of Akron: Volunteers needed Mondays through Thursdays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. for a minimum of one day a week for eight weeks (September-October and/or April-May) to help with SNAG, a golf program for children grades first through fifth. Minimum age: 18.


Habitat for Humanity of Summit County: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays to work at retail ReStore. Minimum age: 16.


Info Line Inc.: Volunteers needed weekdays for a minimum of five hours a week on a flexible basis to provide various IT support assistance. Volunteers must have basic computer skills, including MS Office, able to operate office machines and be able to lift 20 pounds. Minimum age: 18.


International Institute of Akron: Volunteer instructors needed Monday and Wednesday mornings and evenings to teach English. Minimum age: 18.


Mobile Meals: Volunteers needed twice a month to provide grocery shopping services for homebound individuals. Minimum age: 18, younger with adult supervision.


Mothers Assisting Mothers: Volunteers needed between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays to count and organize donated clothing and gift items. Minimum age: 18, 17 with adult supervision.


Project: LEARN of Summit County: Volunteers needed to tutor adults three hours a week. Training (nine hours) every other month; workshop fee is $25. Length of commitment is one year. Minimum age: 18.


Salvation Army of Summit County: Volunteers needed 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. once a week to help cook food for meals program and help with kitchen inventory. Minimum age: 18.


Second 8th Week World Wide Apostolic Assemblies-Ohio: Volunteers needed between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays to assist with typing, cleaning, repairing computers and sound equipment and distributing literature throughout the church neighborhood. Minimum age: 20.


Senior Independence Hospice: Volunteers needed at least two hours a week any day of the week to provide companionship and emotional support to patients. Minimum age: 18.


Summa's Palliative Care & Hospice Services: Volunteers who can sew needed to create KeepSake Pillows for bereaved families who have lost a loved one. Minimum age: 16.


Summa Western Reserve Hospital (Cuyahoga Falls): Volunteers needed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. for a minimum of one four-hour shift a week, any day of the week, to help patients get to/from tests and discharge, take specimens to lab, deliver charts to various departments and run errands in the hospital. Minimum age: 18.


Summit Consumer Peer Support: Volunteers needed weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for a minimum of two hours a day or six hours per week to provide administrative assistance. Minimum age: 25.
