YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

Akron Summit Community Action, Inc. (ASCA) is accepting applications for the next YouthBuild class starting September 28, 2009.

YouthBuild is a community youth development program modeled after the National YouthBuild program and is FREE to eligible participants at or below 125% of poverty level.

YouthBuild participants learn job skills and serve their communities by building and or rehabbing affordable housing while transforming their own lives and roles in the community. The ASCA YouthBuild program focuses on construction skill training, education, support services and job skills to disadvantaged low-income young adults ages 18-24. 30 students will be accepted in the YouthBuild class.

The YouthBuild program addresses the core issues facing low-income communities including housing, education, employment, crime prevention, and leadership development.

During a 9-12 month time frame, the students work towards receiving their GED or high school diploma. Vocational and life skills training, such as leadership and decision making are also part of the curriculum. Vocational training is accomplished through hands-on experience gained through on-site housing rehabilitation or construction work. Job training, counseling and supportive services are offered through the classroom portion of the program. Students also earn a stipend provided by the program.

ASCA YouthBuild is holding Informational Sessions scheduled at the locations below. In order to be considered for the next step in the selection process, attendance in at least one of the Informational Sessions is mandatory.
