Celebrating Sobriety With AA Anniversary

It has been 70 years since Sister Mary Ignatia and Dr. Robert Smith treated the first patient with alcoholism at Summa St. Thomas Hospital.

The anniversary of the unit, now at Ignatia Hall, will be celebrated during Founders' Day Weekend from June 12- 14 at St. Thomas Hospital.

Recovering alcoholics flock to Akron for the event each year to celebrate the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

This Founders' Day Weekend is made even more special with the unveiling of the Sobriety Quilt.

The quilt was made to honor the the continued commitment to the treatment of alcoholism and addiction.

"The Sobriety Quilt is designed to remind us that we are all individuals on our own path to recovery, yet still united as one family under the 12-step philosophy," said Ignatia Hall, Summa Center for Behavioral Health Manager Greer Kabb-Langkamp. "Nearly 100 purchased quilt squares and countless volunteer hours were put into this amazing quilt and we will continue to add quilt squares with donations benefiting the ongoing work at Ignatia Hall."

The Sister Ignatia Heritage Center was presented in 2006 to pay homage to Sister Ignatia and Bill W., the other co-founder of AA, with history and information of alcoholism treatment.

Founders' Day visitors can tour the Heritage Center from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. over the weekend.

Free shuttle service is provided by the University of Akron on Saturday, June 13.
