Last night's bitter cold temperatures forced the more of the homeless to seek shelter at the Haven of Rest.
Reverend Ben Walker says they noticed more than a ten-percent increase in the amount of men who came to the homeless shelter last night.
Usually, the Haven of Rest cares for about 140 men in the homeless shelter at this time of year. Last night, that number reached nearly 160.
Reverend Walker says their women's shelter, called the Harvest Home Shelter, was overcrowded with mats being put on floor. Plus, Reverend Walker says the family shelter was overcrowded as well.
Reverend Walker says they can handle up to 180 homeless men at the Haven of Rest by 'expanding internally'. Walker says that means by moving cots and mats around, they are able to handle more homeless men.
To handle the additional numbers of homeless at this time of year, Reverend Walker says they rely upon their friends in the community at-large and donations.
The Haven of Rest is located at 175 East Market Street. The Harvest Home Shelter is located at 24 North Prospect.
