Veterans Day
Veterans Day
is this Monday, November 11th. It is a National Holiday, so be aware
that many businesses, libraries, schools, and government facilities will be closed,
although the National Cemeteries will remain open.
Did you know
that Veterans Day was originally named “Armistice Day”? It was a day set aside
to honor all World War I veterans. In 1954, as a result of the number of
soldiers that were a part of World War II and the preceding wars after that
Congress decided to replace Armistice with “Veterans” so that all soldiers,
sailors, Marines, and airmen would be honored.
The staff at Community
Voice Summit & Springwire appreciates the brave men and women who have
served and fought to protect our county. Throughout the weekend and on Monday,
there will be events happening across the country to honor the commitment that
our nation’s veterans have made to our country. You may be able to find out
about these events by visiting your local chamber of commerce or your local
Veterans Administration. Many towns and cities will be hosting a Veterans Day
Parade where veterans and civilians can come out to honor our nation’s
veterans.
I would like
to end with a quote from President Woodrow Wilson when Veterans Day or
Armistice Day was first proclaimed on November 11th.
“To us in
America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in
the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for
the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because
of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and
juice in the councils of the nations.”
We also have
a special message created by Community Voice Mail participants from across the
country expressing their appreciation of our armed forces. To take a listen

Take good
care and thank you to all our veterans!
