Job Readiness Skills Part 2

RESUME TIPS: For Jobseekers

A resume is a document listing your accomplishments and qualifications, with the purpose of securing you an interview for a job. This is usually the first impression that employers have of you so you want it to be a good one. View your resume as an opportunity to market yourself to potential employers, not just a summary of your career history.

A resume generally includes the following sections:

Heading
The heading consists of your basic contact information, including your name, permanent address, phone number, cell phone number and a professional e-mail address. Do NOT include anywhere on your resume personal information, such as your social security number, gender, marital status or disability.

Objective
The objective either states the position you are applying for or is a summary of your strongest selling points. You don’t necessarily need an objective on your resume, but it is recommended for entry-level applicants whose goals are not yet defined, and for people who are changing careers and have resumes that don’t necessarily apply to the position or industry.

Experience
The experience section summarizes your work-related history and targets your job goals. Each listing should state the job title, the name of the organization, the company’s location, the dates you were employed and your work responsibilities. For the latter, don’t just list job duties; make sure you emphasize your skills and accomplishments. One way to do this is to incorporate action words. For example, use “established” or “launched” instead of “started.” You can also quantify your results. Rather than “Increased revenue between 2005-2007” you could state “Increased revenues from $500,000 in 2005 to $2.1 million in 2007.” The more specific and result-oriented your resume is, the easier it will be for the employer to see how valuable you are.

If your work history is limited or inconsistent, include non-work experiences related to the job you are applying for. This could include volunteer experience, self-employment initiatives, or other areas where you have used your skills.

Employers may view large gaps in work history suspiciously and not follow up with a jobseeker as a result. If you have a recent gap of more than six months on your resume, you may want to include some explanation in your resume or cover letter. It may be more helpful to include this in the body of your cover letter where you can provide more explanation. Your explanation should have a positive tone and convey that you can perform the job.

Education
The education portion consists of your degree (BA, BS, MBA, MD), institution, concentration (major, minor) and grade point average (GPA) if it is over a 3.0. You can also include courses you have taken that are relevant to the job you¡¦re applying for.

Generally, you want to put your experience before your education if you have at least five years of work experience. Thus, for most college graduates or entry-level applicants, education can come before experience.

Skills
There are three types of skills that you can list. The first is job-specific and refers to the abilities necessary to perform the functions of the job you're seeking. The next is considered transferable skills, or those that can be applied to a variety of professions, such as data processing or people skills. Finally there is the adaptable set, or personality attributes that you think will be beneficial to the employer.

Additional Information
All other information falls into this category, including awards, publishing credits, and testimonials. Hobbies generally are excluded unless they are relevant to your career goals or demonstrate desirable character traits.

General Guidelines

  • Be concise but relevant. The average employer spends less than thirty seconds glancing at a resume to decide whether or not to discard it. You don¡¦t want to bog them down with dense paragraphs and wordy descriptions. Instead use bullets or asterisks, and be careful with your word choice so that you¡¦ll be able to present all the pertinent information about yourself in the simplest and clearest terms.
  • Length. The rule of thumb is to keep resumes only one page long. Again, employers are not going to spend much time reading over your resume. Be short, concise and to the point. There are a few exceptions to this rule, however. Your resume can be two pages if you have over ten years work experience or are in a field that requires technical and engineering skills that you must list. In addition, your resume can be three pages long if you're a senior-level manager/executive with a lot of leadership experience, or you are in the academic or scientific field and need to list your publications, speaking engagements, patents, etc.
  • Font. Use easy-to-read fonts such as Times, Arial, Palatino or Helvetica. Usually, your name appears in the largest typeset, but for everything else, use 10-14 point.
  • Paper. Use white or off-white resume paper, which is heavier than regular paper. Also, use a laser printer to ensure your resume will be professional and easy to read if the employer must scan it.
  • Proofread. Proofread your resume. Then do it again. Then ask a friend, family member or career services person to look it over. There is nothing worse than having your resume tossed in the recycling bin because you used “there” instead of “their” a dozen times, so make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors As for your final check, hold your resume at arm’s length and critique its overall appearance. Does it look simple and easy to read? Is it too cluttered or are there too many white spaces? The more streamlined and easy to breeze through, the better.
  • Sending it in. If you’re mailing it, enclose a cover letter and use a letter-sized envelope. If you’re sending your resume via e-mail, you should cut and paste it into the body of the e-mail and use an appropriate subject heading. (“Here is my resume” does not suffice). Unless the employer specifically asked for attachments, refrain from sending your resume as one, since many companies are wary of viruses. Basically, follow the employer or recruiter’s instructions or else you risk them not even bothering to glance at your resume.

Job Readiness Skills

COVER LETTER TIPS: For Jobseekers

Most job seekers will agree that they spend the majority of their time and effort into creating a top notch resume but fall short when it comes to drafting an equally compelling cover letter. A cover letter works in tandem with a resume to get you an interview. In some cases it can be considered just as important since it can be the only thing that convinces an employer to even look at your resume.

The basic outline for a cover letter is as follows:

Heading
Your name and address should be front and center of the cover letter. Underneath and justified to the left should be the date, followed by a space and then the employer’s name, position and address of the organization.

Salutation
If you know the name of the employer, address your cover letter to them with the correct title (Mr., Ms., Dr., etc.). If you do not have a name or title, go with something like “Dear Hiring Manager” and try to avoid overused salutations like “To Whom It May Concern.”

Opening Paragraph
You want to accomplish three things in the opening paragraph: 1.) state the position you’re applying for, 2.) mention where you heard of the opening (EARN and Ticket to Hire, One Stop Career Center, company Website, classifieds, Monster.com, etc.) and 3.) provide a synopsis of why you should be the top candidate for this position. Be creative and really try to catch the employer’s attention.

Body
The body is usually one to two paragraphs long and should be considered your sales pitch. You want to emphasize what you can do for the employer and how your skills qualify you for the position.

They’re wondering whether or not to invite you in for an interview, so you want to stress your main selling points, and remember to emphasize your accomplishments and achievements rather than just listing your job duties. If your work history is limited or you have not had a job recently, use these paragraphs to stress the personal qualities and experiences you have that the employer has indicated they want (i.e., creative, reliable, knowledgeable).

Closing Paragraph
This is the part where you can outline your plan of action. First, express again your interest in the position and then tell them how you’ll contact them to confirm they received your resume, stating your hope that the two of you can set up an actual face-to-face meeting. The most important part, of course, is that you take action and carry out your plan afterwards.

Close
End with a complimentary close such as “Sincerely,” or “Respectfully Yours,” and then print your name. Finally, don’t forget to sign it!

General things to keep in mind

• Your cover letter should not exceed one page. Remember, employers must wade through a lot of cover letters and resumes for one position, so they don’t have a lot of time to go through each letter.

• Don’t repeat your resume word for word. A cover letter allows you to address certain points in your resume, and perhaps to expand on the most pertinent details.

• Customize your cover letter for each employer and each position. Don’t just write one general cover letter and mass mail it to all the employers you’re interested in. The more specific you are about your qualifications for a particular position, the greater the odds are that you’ll be invited in for an interview.

• Spell check and proofread carefully and then have another person read it over before sending out your cover letter. Using an automated spell check tool is helpful but cannot pick up all possible mistakes.

Summer Crisis Program helps low-income families stay connected

Program starts July 1; appointments can be made starting today by calling appointment line 1-866-504-7400

The hot summer months can be dangerous to the health of consumers who have difficulty paying higher utility bills. With an estimated one in nine Ohio residential utility customers experiencing disconnection of either their electric or natural gas service for non-payment during the past year, the need for assistance programs such as the Summer Crisis Program is more vital than ever.

The Summer Crisis Program, available from July 1 through Aug. 31, is administered annually by the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD). This year, households with an annual income at or below 200 percent of the 2009 federal poverty guidelines ($44,100 for a family of four) will be eligible for assistance. Income-eligible households will receive up to $175 toward bill payment assistance. Consumers should contact their local community action agency to determine the availability of air conditioners, fans or other assistance that might be available.

In addition to the income guidelines, households must meet the following criteria to be eligible for assistance:

● Have a member who is at least 60 years of age or older; or

● Have a member under the age of 60 with health issues that are verified by documentation from a physician.

Consumers can use the following chart to determine whether their household meets the income guidelines:

--
Income chart for consumers at or below 200 percent of 2009 federal poverty guidelines

Size of household Total Annual Income Total household income
for past three months

1 $21,660.00 $5,415.00
2 $29,140.00 $7,285.00
3 $36,620.00 $9,155.00
4 $44,100.00 $11,025.00
5 $51,580.00 $12,895.00
6 $59,060.00 $14,765.00

For households with more than six members, add $7,480 per person for annual income; add $1,870 for three months.

Facebook Do's and Don'ts

Facebook users trump the entire population of the United States, by more than 50 million, but there are seven things every Facebook user should stop doing, immediately.

"I try not to be, but I know some people who are very obsessed with it," said Kaci Kizziar. She is one of the 400 million people who use the social networking site that's popular and dangerous. "You just have to decide what you want the world to know and what you don't," said Kizziar.

Consumer Reports now has seven things everyone should stop doing on Facebook and it starts with logging on. Number one: You don't want to use a weak password.

"Keep the computer in a common area of the home, see what your kids are doing," said Frankie Goldberg. She's with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in Cleveland and she agrees, too much information is dangerous.

Number two: Don't reveal your entire birthday because it's the key to your personal information. As a user, you have some control with the third Facebook "don't": Don't overlook the privacy settings.

Experts say tagging pictures or videos can also be problematic, even more so for kids because you may not want their information online. "Once you post that photograph, it's online forever and those pictures can be manipulated and they can be sent to hundreds, if not thousands of people within minutes," said Goldberg.

Number four: Don't tag anything with your child's full name. Number five: Don't mention you're going out of town, unless you want everyone to know there's no one home.

"In terms of privacy, yeah, you don't want to see people flaunting the idea that anybody can access anything," said Matthew Schnupp from Cleveland.

The sixth don't on the list: Don't let search engines find you, and you can do that by only letting friends - and not "friends of friends" - see your profile. And Number seven: Don't let kids go online alone.

"I think we are responsible for what our kids have access to, what we put on there and a lot of the fear, I think, stems from a misunderstanding of what is it that I'm really getting involved in," said Schnupp.

According to Facebook, users spend a combined 500 billion minutes on their site each month.
