2010 U.S. Census form arriving in your mailbox

April 1 is National Census Day and a good date to keep in mind to make sure you have returned your census form.

You should be receiving your 2010 U.S. Census in the mail in the next few days. It has only 10 questions that you have to answer but you can't answer them online, only on the form when you receive it.

The 2010 U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years.

The 2010 Census will help communities receive more than $400 billion in federal funds each year for things like: hospitals. job training centers, schools, senior centers, bridges, tunnels, other public works projects and emergency services.

The data collected by the census also help determine the number of seats your state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Census forms will be delivered to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico in the middle of this monnth.

When you receive yours, just answer the 10 short questions and then mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided.

If you do not mail back the form, a census taker will come to your home between mid-April and July and ask you the questions in person.

A special Service Based Enumeration program will be conducted over three days at the end of March 2010, at various facilities identified by the Census Bureau with the help of advocacy organizations, and local, state and national partners.

On Monday, March 29, 2010, census workers will conduct a count at emergency and transitional shelters with sleeping facilities;

On Tuesday, March 30, 2010, census workers will conduct a count at soup kitchens and regularly scheduled mobile food vans; and

On Wednesday, March 31, 2010, census workers will conduct a count at pre-identified outdoor locations such as encampments underneath highway overpasses or bridges and other areas where members of the homeless population are known to live.

For more information about the census and what you can expect please call 330-776-3030

Info Line and the 2010 Census

Info Line has been asked to serve as a 2010 Census Questionnaire Assistance Center and we’ve accepted the challenge! From Friday March 19th to Monday April 19th the Census is setting up these assistance sites all over the country so people who have questions about filling out their Census forms can come in and talk to a real person so they are sure to be counted.

If you have questions about the questionnaire, call the national Telephone Questionnaire Assistance center at 1-866-872-6868. (If you prefer a Spanish-speaking operator, then dial 1-866-928-2010.) The lines will be open seven days a week from February 25, 2010 through July 30, 2010. For the hearing-impaired, dial 1-866-783-2010.

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years. The 2010 Census will help communities receive more than $400 billion in federal funds each year for things like:

• Hospitals
• Job training centers
• Schools
• Senior centers
• Bridges, tunnels and other-public works projects
• Emergency services

The data collected by the census also help determine the number of seats your state has in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In March of 2010, census forms will be delivered to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico. When you receive yours, just answer the 10 short questions and then mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided. If you don’t mail the form back, you may receive a visit from a census taker, who will ask you the questions from the form. The best way to ensure your privacy is to fill out the questionnaire and mail it back.

The majority of the country will receive English-only materials. Households in areas with high concentrations of Spanish-speaking residents may receive a bilingual (English/Spanish) form.

Any personal data you provide is protected under federal law.

What to bring to the tax man

Every year, millions of Americans use amateur or professional tax preparers to prepare and file their tax returns. But using a pro doesn't mean that you don't still play a critical role in getting your taxes done. Those who fail to provide their preparers with all of the necessary documents and information may miss out on important deductions or credits -- or underreport their income and find themselves in hot water with the IRS. (Find out what you can deduct, read The 10 Most Overlooked Tax Deductions and Tax Tips: Filing To Your Advantage.)

In order to avoid these problems, here's what you need to bring with you when you visit the tax man this year:

If you…

You'll Need…

Are a salaried employee

Your W-2 form(s)

Are self-employed, or earned rental, royalty or miscellaneous income

1099-MISC Form(s), receipts and/or detailed records of all expenses related to this income

Have unreimbursed childcare expenses

Records from the care provider breaking down all expenses paid

Paid alimony to an ex-spouse

Written record of what you paid, as well as a copy of the divorce decree or separation agreement if your preparer does not already have it on file

Have income from partnerships or passive activities

Form K-1

Have Social Security income

Form 1099-SSA

Made contributions to a traditional, SEP or SIMPLE IRA

Statement(s) from the custodian showing the amount of your contributions for the year

Have retirement income from an IRA, pension or annuity

Form 1099-R

Made any charitable contributions of either cash or property

Receipt from charity, along with qualified appraisal of any tangible property donated

Moved from one residence to another

Receipts of moving expenses

Paid federal or state estimated taxes

Records and proof of payments made

Have a mortgage…

Form 1098

Have unreimbursed educational expenses either for yourself or your dependents, including tuition, fees, room and board, lab costs, books and supplies

Form 1098E

Have investment income from interest, dividends and/or capital gains

Form(s) 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, and 1099-B

Have student loan interest

Your annual statement from each lender showing the amount of interest you paid

Special Cases

Be prepared to do further research for specialized issues. Your tax preparer will tell you if any further information is needed. Contact your client or employer if you are missing any W-2s or 1099s. All issuers of these documents should be able to furnish you with copies if necessary.

It is also a good idea to bring copies of your last three tax returns to your preparer if he or she does not already have this on file. The IRS can provide you with copies of your tax forms if you do not have these on hand.

Complete form 4506-T and submit it to the IRS. They will send you a computerized copy of everything that you reported on your tax return for that year. Then you can contact each of your statement issuers and request a duplicate copy from them (you may have to pay a small fee to get this done). Of course, you can authorize or request your tax preparer or accountant to obtain these documents as well, but this will slow down the preparation process and may add to your fees. The IRS generally keeps copies of all of your tax documents anywhere from four to ten years.

Other documents that you may need could include divorce decrees, records of partially depreciated property, and any correspondence that you received from either the IRS or your state department of revenue.

The Bottom Line

Chances are you will only need a few of the documents listed above when you prepare your return. For more information about other tax forms that you may need, visit the IRS website and check out the "1040 Central" link

Stark County program repairs cars to get people to work

STARK COUNTY -- Lalana Vales, of Massillon, is a busy mother, student and worker. Every day, seven days a week, she gets up at 4:30 a.m. to deliver newspapers in her secondhand Ford Explorer. At least she did until the Explorer's transmission went out.

Lalana borrowed her Mom's car for a while, but that couldn't go on forever.

Repairs to her SUV would cost about $1,100.

Recently Lalana learned of a program through Stark County Job and Family Services that will pay up to $1,000 toward vehicle repairs to allow a resident to get to work, look for work, or attend classes that may lead to work.

"You must have at least one child under age 18," said Tom Thompson, of Job and Family Services, "and your household income must be no more than 200 percent above the federal poverty level."

On Thursday, the county had Lalana's SUV towed to a Massillon auto repair shop where its worn out transmission is being replaced by a guaranteed used transmission.

The county will pay $1,000 of the bill. Lalana will owe the remainder, about $100.

"The program's like a small miracle," she said. "I almost lost my car and I would have lost my job."

Each of Ohio's counties decides which job assistance programs will be of the most help to resdients locally. Check with your local county Job and Family Services office.

Besides the car repair program, Stark County also provides four-month bus passes for workers, people seeking work and those in job-related training who don't have their own vehicle.

The local Job and Family Services office also has children's booster car seats available at no charge, to allow families to comply with new state laws requiring travel restraint of children beyond toddler age.
